I had open heart surgery in April 2022 which was conducted by Professor Olaf Wendler. The operation went extremely well. Apart from the success of the procedure itself, Professor Wendler did a wonderful job in explaining to my wife and I what was involved and what to expect and indeed helped me to be in the right frame of mind both before and after the procedure. This was extremely important for me during what was of course a milestone in my life. Ultimately, my wife and I both strongly believed that we could not have been in better hands and indeed were privileged to be under his excellent care and attention.

Professor Wendler is an outstanding Surgeon. This was the second time I had open heart surgery and I recommend him and his team in highest possible terms. Here is what I think makes him different to any other surgeon I spoke to: - He reassured my fears about surgery by emphasizing that is very much focused on safety of the surgery and I think his outstanding track record speaks volumes here - Professor Wendler is very knowledgeable with respect to all of the most recent studies and will also share with his patients when he believes some of the results should be discounted and how that affects his care recommendation - This was my second surgery. So far I had less side effects after the this surgery than the first one (I expected the other way around). I think that this speaks to his outstanding skills as a surgeon. - Professor Wendler is a very caring doctor. He came to see me everyday in hospital when he was in London. He did everything he could to make my recovery as effortless as possible. - His whole team is outstanding. Jessica, the senior nurse he works with has kept in touch with me on a regular basis to ensure that all of my questions before and after surgery were answered and that everything was going well. - The Cleveland Clinic is also unlike any hospital in the UK. Very modern inside and the staff were outstanding. There was a nurse in my room usually within 30 seconds or less of me using the buzzer. The nurses always went above and beyond in their care. I couldnt ask for better care during the whole time in Hospital. Overall, I interviewed 6 surgeons and I am very lucky to have come across Professor Wendler, who provided outstanding care.

I had my surgery on 12th May 2022 to replace my aortic valve and to fix my aortic aneurysm. I travelled from Lancashire to The Cleveland Hospital, London to be cared for by Professor Olaf Wendler and I could not sing his praises enough. From the very first consultation he put my mind at ease and most importantly, listened to what I had to say and treated me as an individual. He was caring, compassionate and I had every faith in him. I went into my surgery feeling calm and confident. The aftercare has been outstanding and I know if I ever have any questions, Professor Wendler will do his upmost to contact me back as soon as he is able. My recovery has been great! What an amazing surgeon and fellow he is. Thank you for everything.

I have recently had serious cardiac problems and was fortunate enough to be referred to Professor Wendler. I cannot recommend the Professor and his Team highly enough, this isn’t just a tradesman doing some work for you, this is a man who quite literally has got your life in his hands and as such you want the best. In my estimation and experience Professor Wendler is the best. Not only is the Professor a nice person, but from day one he always appeared to have time for me and my family, he explained everything clearly, calmly and when appropriate a touch of warmth and humour. I felt that here was a person who was in control and knew his subject inside out and knew exactly what he was doing, this is so reassuring at what is a very difficult time. On the morning of the Operation, a very nervous time for the patient, he was the first to greet me and settle me down, I can remember feeling very reassured. Post operation I saw him everyday bar one, I thought he would have the weekend off, but no he was there both days, he explained everything, always had time and made myself and my family feel like we were in the hands of someone who cared personally and really knew what he was doing. I mentioned his team earlier, not only has he got a knowledgeable, professional, caring Team round him, but they all spoke really warmly and highly of him, which I think speaks volumes, this was not prompted, you could just feel the loyalty and trust that he has from his staff. One person even said if they were having my Operation they wouldn’t want anyone other than the “Prof” to do it. I want to post this review as I really think that the Professor deserves it and I hope that it helps others in my position, I don’t think it is possible to recommend anyone higher than this, “if I was to need this life saving operation again I would only want Professor Olaf Wendler to perform it” and I would recommend him to anyone in a similar position.

Specialises in

  • Cardiothoracic surgery

Profile

I have been a Consultant in cardiothoracic surgery for more than 20 years and performed more than 5000 open cardiac operations. Since 2018 I am Chair of the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic London. Our outpatient facilities opened in September 2021 and our new state of the art hospital in March 2022. Together with my colleagues we have started a new era of cardiovascular and thoracic private care in London.

When I started my career in the UK in 2004, I became Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at King’s College Hospital. I became Clinical Director of the cardiothoracic department in 2006. I hold a chair for cardiac surgery at King's College London.
In my role as Lead for Cardiothoracic Surgery and as Clinical Director I established the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) Program at King’s which started with the first transapical aortic valve implantation in the UK in July 2007
Another areas of my interests is complete arterial bypass surgery and I have further developed a technique of “T-graft” revascularisation using only two skeletonized conduits, mostly the left internal mammary artery and one radial artery.
I am particularly renowned for my achievements in heart valve surgery with a focus on preservation of native heart valves. In patients with mitral valve regurgitation due to degenerative and endocarditic disease I achieve repair rates of around 95%. In patients with aortic regurgitation and aortic root dilatation I replace the aortic root and preserve the native aortic valve in a “David’s” type of surgery in those with anatomically intact valves. I am also specialised in aortic root replacements using stentless bioprostheses in elderly patients and those with complicated aortic valve endocarditis and aortic root pathology.
I perform all kinds of surgery on the thoracic aorta and in this context I cooperate regularly with my vascular surgical colleagues at King’s. In this cooperation, I perform aortic arch replacements using the “Elephant-Trunk” technique in patients with mega-aortic-syndrome, as the first stage treatment to facilitate endovascular treatment of the thoraco-abdominal aorta.
